NCLE
Restricts Alternative Renewal to Board Certified Opticians
The
National Contact Lens Examiners' (NCLE) current interpretation
of Florida's opticianry practice act has created an awkward
and cumbersome process for Florida's opticians that are
not Florida board certified and would like to maintain
their NCLE certification.
The
Professional Opticians of Florida's board of directors
requested in writing in May of this year that the NCLE
review and
revise its policy for the alternative renewal method for
Florida Licensed opticians.
The
ABO/NCLE's "alternative renewal method" allows a licensed
optician not to collect and send in the proper number of
blue and gold ABO/NCLE forms as proof of continuing education
credits to renew ABO/NCLE certification. Instead, an optician
only has to send in a copy of the current state licensed
as proof of meeting the state's continuing education
requirements.
All Florida licensed opticians can use this method to renew
their American Board of Opticianry certification.
Even
though Florida has one of the most comprehensive and stringent
requirements for licensure, the NCLE board of directors
responded to POF's request in a letter dated September
9,2002:
The National Contact Lens Examiners board
of directors has reviewed your letter dated May 30, 2002,
and has determined that one hour of contact lens related
continuing education is not adequate for certification renewal
purposes. As a result, the NCLE will only accept proof of
licensure from Florida board certified opticians for certification
renewal purposes.
